Summary:

Provenance: The Library acquired the fragment from Alfred Reed (1875 – 1975), a benefactor of the library since 1948. Reed purchased it from English bookseller Alan G. Thomas (catalogue 16 (1965), no. 12b). It came from the partially dismembered and imperfect parent manuscript (164 leaves, several mutilated) Thomas bought at the Sotheby & Co Western and Oriental Manuscripts and Miniatures sale on 6 July 1964 (lot. 246) for 280 pounds.

Rose Faunce has identified another leaf from the Book of Hours in Sydney and the US (University of Sydney Library Ad. MS. 17; Winthrop University Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections 1500-Med MS 15A-B).

Contents: Psalm and Canticle of Ezechias, part of the service of Lauds in the Office of the Dead.

Decoration: One 2-line initial in gold with brown highlights set upon striking blue ground; four versal capitals in blue or gold, pen flourished in red or black with extensions into the margins. Line filler bars alternately blue and brown embellished with fronds in gold. Marginal panel decorated with acanthus foliage in blue and gold and long-stemmed blue and gold flowers.
