Fragmentarium Announces Zeno-Karl-Schindler Foundation (ZKS) Fellowships
The Zeno-Karl-Schindler Foundation (ZKS) has provided Fragmentarium - Laboratory for Medieval Manuscript Fragments, with a grant to support two early-career scholars in their research projects. With “Manuscript Fragments in Argentina”, Dr. Marcela Borelli (Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas y Crítica Textual– CONICET) will conduct a first-ever survey of medieval manuscript fragments contained in Argentine libraries, archives, museums, and private and public collections. Complementing Borelli’s exploration of Latin American fragments is “Maculature in the van Buchel Collection”, the project to be conducted by Dr. Vito Santoliquido (École nationale supérieure des sciences de l’information et des bibliothèques, Lyons). Dr. Santoliquido will study the fragments bound in the former library of Hubert van Buchell (1513-1599), now at the Utrecht University Library. The results of both projects will be made available online and in Open Access on Fragmentarium, as well as in peer-reviewed scientific publications. In addition, the ZKS grant will enable Fragmentarium to launch a pilot project of integrating Fragmentarium’s collection of fragments with an Open Linked Data model that would allow the unequivocal identification of handwritten sources such as manuscript codices and fragments, while enabling the connection of those sources other data available online.

Fragmentarium Announces Grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has provided Fragmentarium - Laboratory for Medieval Manuscript Fragments with funding to support groundbreaking research into the world’s written cultural heritage. This grant enables the digitization, exploration, description, and publication of medieval manuscript fragments from the National Library of France (BnF) in Paris. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation/Fragmentarium Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Laura Albiero, has already begun analyzing some of the most important pieces in the collection, those that survive in fragment volumes (“guard books”). These books were made in the nineteenth-century, when librarians grouped by subject and bound together the most precious fragments from the Middle Ages. In spite of their significance, these fragments have never been catalogued adequately or explored systematically. In its first months, this project has already led to significant and exciting discoveries, including the discovery of unknown liturgical texts and the identification of the place of production of some fragments. The first fragments are expected to be published on Fragmentarium in Spring 2020.
