Provenance: This cutting was acquired from Maggs Bros. Bulletin 11 (November 1982), no. 20. for the Alfred and Isabel Reed Collection, Dunedin Public Library, through the bequest of Alfred H. Reed (1875–1975).

The cutting originates from a Lectionary probably made for use by a Benedictine monastery. It was offered for sale for £45 in Erik von Scherling's Rotulus: A Bulletin for Manuscript-Collectors, IV (Winter 1937), no. 1849. The manuscript was described as imperfect, comprising 161 leaves and lacking at least twenty-one leaves. A number of its leaves were subsequently dispersed and incorporated into Otto F. Ege's Fifty Original Leaves from Medieval Manuscripts, assembled in the 1940s, in which the Lectionary appears as exemplar no. 3.

Text: The final portion of the reading from Luke 9:53-56, recounting the rejection of Jesus by a Samaritan village, followed by the Gospel reading of the Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15) appointed for Sexagesima Sunday.

Script and decoration: Written in Carolingian minuscule. The incipit of the Gospel reading begins with a large decorated initial I (In illo tempore), executed in red and blue and embellished with pen work extending into the margin.

Reconstruction: This cutting forms part of an ongoing digital reconstruction of the dispersed manuscript. Additional identified fragments may be viewed, and further fragments contributed, through Fragmentarium (F-phob).
