Reconstruction Summary

Provenance: The Library acquired the fragment in 1966 from the estate of Sydney photographer and avid bibliophile Colin B. Berckelman. The leaf can be traced to its imperfect parent manuscript (164 leaves, several mutilated), sold as lot 246 in Sotheby & Co Western and Oriental Manuscripts and Miniatures, 6 July 1964.

Text: The text comprises part of the office of Compline in the Hours of the Virgin, beginning with the concluding verses of the canticle Nunc dimittis, followed by antiphons, responsory verses and the Angelus prayer.

Script and decoration: Written in lettre bâtarde script. Two 2-line initials in gold with brown highlights on blue ground; four versal capitals alternately blue or gold, with pen flourishing in red or black extending into the margins. Line fillers consist of alternating blue and brown bars embellished with fronds in gold.

Marginal panel decorated with acanthus foliage in blue and gold together with long-stemmed flowers.

Reconstruction: This leaf is included as part of an ongoing digital reconstruction of the manuscript's surviving fragments. Additional identified fragments may be viewed and contributed via Fragmentarium F-g81r
