Summary
Illuminated in Augsburg between 1485 and 1499, this cutting likely originated from the Franciscan women’s convent of Maria Stern. It features an historiated initial C with Saints Francis, Clare, and Mary Magdalene, rendered in fine detail against tooled gold. The verso preserves faint Gothic script and square notation reading “Veniet ecce…[po]testate magna,” a chant from Matins of the First Sunday of Advent—indicating the fragment might have come from an antiphonary.
