Summary

Page from a gradual containing the beginning of the introit for Trinity Sunday, which is marked by a historiated initial. A portrait of a cleric in a white robe, presumably the abbot who commissioned the manuscript, is depicted in the border next to the initial, praying to the Holy Trinity. Gerard vander Schaeft was abbot of Averbode Abbey from 1501 until his death in 1532.

The page has a trompe-l'oeil border in the Ghent-Bruges style strewn with pansies, strawberries, carnations, thistles, roses and other flowering plants, as well as butterflies, birds and snails. Gerard vander Schaeft's arms, abbot's crosier and motto are depicted in the border in the bottom margin.
