Book Decoration and Musical Notation

Description

Highlighted cadel (2 lines, yellow), red lombard (2 lines).

  • Musical Notation

The fragment displays a typical fifteenth-century square notation on red staff lines, with pronounced Italian rather than French characteristics, particularly in the form of the stepped scandicus. A custos is present at the end of the line, while the clefs are not visible due to the loss of the beginning of the stave.

    History

    Origin

The musical notation reveals strong Italian palaeographical features, most notably in the stepped form of the scandicus. However, the script and decoration argues for a Central European origin.

    Provenance

The host volume contains the following annotations from the 17th c.: "Hic Liber est Meus Jesus est spes" (front pastedown); "Ignatius ????"  (front flyleaf); "Ez az könyü az enyim bizonyság az Isten aki korgizhat itt vagyon én mint ve[ttem]. Fekete Ignatius" (This book is mine, God witnesses, I have bought it.) Further probationes pennae with the name "Ignatius" on the rear flyleaf.
