Letter or charter
F-0vd4
Hyperspectral image acquisition and processing by Baharan Pourahmadi-Meibodi, University of Southern Denmark.
General Information
Cursive documentary script.
The text is quite difficult to make out but appears to be written in some form of German.
Current Condition
The writing is only on one side of the leaf, that which is glued to the covers. Hence, the text one can make out is faint and mirrored. Since the fragment does not stem from a codex, it is unclear how much of the original document the fragment represents.
History
The language suggests the document comes from the German-speaking area or Denmark, where German was widely used in the early modern period.
Host Volume
The host volume belonged to Herlufsholm Skole, a private Latin school located in Næstved, Sealand founded in 1565 on the grounds of a secularised Benedictine monastery, St Peders Kloster. The old library of Herlufsholm was transferred to the University Library of Southern Denmark in 1968-69. This book is part of a donation made to the school by count Otto Thott (1703-1785), who became warden of the school in 1763 until his death in 1785. Well-known for his book collecting, he gave about 6000 volumes to Herlufsholm’s library in several shipments beginning in 1777.
16th or early 17th century laced-case binding with three very thin visibly laced-in endbands. It originally had bands one could tie together to keep the book closed, but these are no longer there.
