General Information
A fine late Caroline minuscule, showing signs of transition, written by a single hand.
Numerals mark announcing the chapter number have been added in the margins by a different, later hand (with the exception of Chapter 37).
Original Condition
Two halves of single leaf (each half approximately 233 x 249 mm) from a large-format Bible.
-
Verses are divided by a one-line black initial in a column to the left of the main text block; new chapters are marked by two-line red initials.
-
The text runs from front flyleaf recto to rear flyleaf verso, front flyleaf verso to rear flyleaf recto, according to the present labelling system.
Current Condition
The two parts of the large leaf are used as front and rear flyleaves in the host volume. The front of the incunabulum contains the upper part of the leaf, the back, the lower. Given the width of the original page, the direction of reading is perpendicular to that of the host volume.
-
There is slight staining to the parchment in places.
-
Other unidentified fragments from a different manuscript are used as spine liners (see images).
Book Decoration and Musical Notation
Chapters 36 and 37 are marked with a red two-line red penwork initial. The addition of a small initial in the margins by the scribe indicated these were executed by a seperate individual.
