General Information
Written in a Northern Textualis script with straight minims, the uncial ‘s’ at the end of words and the uncial ‘d’ as well as instances of ‘d’ biting ‘o’. Most uses of ‘et’ are abbreviated and written as the Tironian et.
Leaf from the Book of Hours (Sarum Use), showing part of Lauds of the Virgin. Erasure of text begins on the verso, starting with 'Maria virgo semper.' A later hand has written 'Page 9' on the recto and 'Page 10' on the verso.
Original Condition
Current Condition
Slight discoloration around rim on both sides of the leaf and a slight wrinkle below the top right corner on the flesh side. The edge of the leaf is darkened. Previously bound edge is rough, likely cut out of the original book.
Book Decoration and Musical Notation
One large illuminated initial on the recto and three on the verso, all decorated in red and blue ink. Seven smaller initials on the recto and one on the verso have been illuminated and framed with black ink. Several other small initials have been written in blue ink and framed with red ink.
History
The fourth of ten fragments purchased by the Medieval Studies Program at the University of Victoria and then donated to Special Collections in 1992.
