History

Origin

probably northern Low Countries

Provenance

The fragment was recycled at an unknown point in time as the pastedown in a book binding. This book was left to the Crosiers of Sint-Pietersdal of Hoorn (North-Holland) in the will of Andreas, son of Andreas Tymanni, who died in 1493. It is unclear whether the fragment was already a pastedown when Andreas owned the book, and what the origin was of the recycled fragment, which may have come from a bookbinder. The book with the pastedown was later probably owned by one 'magister Henricus Back', whose name is added above the original ex-libris in a later hand.

Remarks

The ex-libris reads: 'Liber fratrum sancte Crucis vallis sancti Petri in Hoirn partium Westfrisie / quem legavit nobis Andreas filius Andree Tymanni in testamento, / qui obiit anno Domini Mo CCCCo XCIIIo, in profesto sancti Bartholomei apostoli' (inner margin of fol. [1]v-[2]r).

Remarks

The fragment was probably used as the upper pastedown. The book is otherwise not identified but was probably an incunable.
