This handsome cursive book-hand is written with twenty-two old Semitic letters, all of consonant value. There were several types of Syriac script; this form, the most important and widely used, is call Nestorian, after the Syrian bishop of Constantinople, whose views created an important schism in the church. The numerous Nestorian converts used this form of writing not only in Syria, but also Persia and India and even as far east as the Great Wall of China.
