Dimensions of pastedown determined by measuring leaves of G fol 1. G fol 1 is the shelfmark of the complete first volume of Hieronymus Epistolae, printed by on parchment by Peter Schoeffer in 1470, in Utrecht University Library.

The glue at the top of the fragment has dried up, allowing to turn it over for a bit, and reveals the letter ‘m’ on the backside of the pastedown, drawn with brush.

Book Decoration and Musical Notation

Description

One red lombard and rubrication. The ‘middle level’ of the decoration, i.e. the rubrication, lombards and simple initials, was done in Mainz, commissioned by Peter Schoeffer.  The caption ‘Ad principiam virgine (…) ēp. xxiiii’, was printed in red. Origin

Pastedown, taken from an edition of Hieronymus' Epistolae, Printed in Mainz by Peter Schoeffer in 1470.

Provenance

From the collection of Huybert van Buchell (1513-1599), canon of the St. Mary’s church in Utrecht. He used works that had become obsolete from this church as binding material for his own books. After his death, his collection was confiscated by the city council and became part of the University Library's collection.
