Book Decoration and Musical Notation
Description
Pen flourished initial R (black, red) and rubricated initial I, 2 lines high.
Musical Notation
Messine Gothic musical notation written on four red staff lines. The C clef is used on the third and fourth lines. A custos is also present. Although the host volume was printed in Frankfurt, the style of the musical notation does not suggest a German origin. It is more likely linked to a tradition from Transylvania.

History
Origin
On account of the musical notation, a Transylvanian origin cannot be excluded. The book may have been bound by the Jesuits of Cluj-Mănăștur, using material from locally available manuscripts.
Provenance
The host volume was printed in Frankfurt in 1653, and was owned by the Jesuits of Cluj-Mănăștur in 1680: "Domus PP. Monostoriensium 1680" (title page). In 1832 the volume is recorded in the collections of the Royal Lyceum: "Bibliothecae Regalis Lycei Claudiopolitani 1832" (title page).
