Host Volume
Both leaves were used as pastedowns for a register of the assizes of beer in the city of Antwerp between 1 August 1559 until 31 October of the same year ('Assijs boeck vande binnen bier assijse vande mes[...] van antwerpen beginnende den eersten dach augusto anno xvc lix ende eindende het selfde quartier den leesten dach october anno xvc lix daer nae'). This particular register was kept by controller Johannes Maechs.
On fol. [1]r, the name 'Joos Maechs' can be read several times ('Joos maechs Contreolleur vande binnenbier asse inde [...]eens[...]'), referring to the controller of the volume. The same hand has also written this motto or benediction: 'Laus deo Pax vives [sic] et Requies defu[n]ctus [sic]'.
Johannes Maechs was a controller and receiver of the beer assizes in Antwerp in the 16th century. He wrote his name on several of the fragments that are now part of the FelixArchief collection.
A modern paper slip with the note '1559' is attached to the leaves with a string, referring to this origin.
