    History

    Origin

The script's verticality is markedly different from other fragments in similar bindings (compare for example F-mdfq or F-f0aa); Dr William Duba suggests it may be from Frisia or the Rhineland.

    Host Volume

Title Collection of motets, madrigals and masses by various composers
    Date of Origin/Publication ca. 1600.
    Shelfmark RARA Musik L 44 133
    Remarks

The host volume belonged to Herlufsholm Skole, a private Latin school located in Næstved, Sealand founded in 1565 on the grounds of a secularised Benedictine monastery, St Peders Kloster. The old library of Herlufsholm was transferred to the University Library of Southern Denmark in 1968-69.

The volume is the only surviving one of a set of at least twelve such musical manuscript, which contained a variety of secular and religious polyphonic music. There are about a dozen such early modern paper manuscripts in the Herlufsholm Collection, most also bound in waste parchment. L 44, however, is the only one that has a long stitch binding (the others all have laced-case or half leather bindings), suggesting it potentially comes from a different context than the others. The binding was clearly taken apart at some point, and the original boards (probably paste laminate) replaced with modern cardboard.

RISM dates L 44 to 1580, though Kongsted (2016) argues for a later dating based on the composers represented in the volume.
