This description is prepared as part of the Digital Explorations: Opening the Medieval Manuscript Fragments from the Ripon Cathedral Library project supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Research England under the Enhancing Research Culture funding stream.
General Information
A simple gothic bookhand with closed two-lobed As, crossed tironian ets, the limb of the h descends below the line.
Original Condition
With 35 lines per column, each page holds about 70 lines of the Ewert edition. On the inner bifolium, the verso begins (column A) with line Ewert line 3461, and the recto with line 4404. Thus the missing section contains what should correspond to ll. 3531-4404, or 873 lines, which corresponds to 12.4 pages, or three bifolia and a column. Therefore, assuming a significant variant or a modes change in lines per page, this bifolium was the fourth-innermost of the quire.
measured ten lines on part 2, outside recto, column A: 60 mm.
Current Condition
Two pieces of a bifolium; Part 1 is the top of the bifolium containing approximately five lines of verse; Part 2 is contiguous with part 1 and contains between twelve and fifteen lines.
Part 2 is folded along the bifolium crease.
Book Decoration and Musical Notation
Alternating red and blue initials. On part 1, pen-filigreed initials
