History

Provenance

Fragments were discovered by Ludwig Tross (1795-1864) in Hamm (Westphalia) and donated to Constant Serrure around 1840. The fragments were sold by Serrure to book seller Camille Vyt in 1872, who in turn sold them to Léonard Willems in 1898, alongside fragments of Alexanders geesten by Jacob van Maerlant (F-axsj on Fragmentarium). The fragments were transferred to the collection of the Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal en Letteren after Willems' death in 1938.

Persons and Institutions Constant Serrure (previous owner, between ca. 1840 - 1872); Camille Vyt (book seller and previous owner, between 1872-1898); Léonard Willems (previous owner, between 1898-1938); Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal en Letteren (from 1938 onwards)

Remarks

Host volume was originally kept at Hamm. Fragments were used in binding as pastedowns; they have since been removed. The host volume was later bought by Willem Jan Roijaards van den Ham (1829-1897) in Utrecht after the removal of the fragments. After the death of Van den Ham's widow in 1910, his whole collection was auctioned off.

Offsets of the Limborch fragments are still descernable on the inside of the binding.
