Description

Throughout the text, there are several illuminated interlace initials - Byzantine Prototype.

The artistic principles and basic techniques of interlaced writing and knotwork were developed in Byzantine scriptoria.

Byzantine interlaced writing flourished in the 12th century. During the 13th century the technique began to display unmistakable signs of stagnation and corruption. This resulted in a gradual decrease in the frequency of its use during the 14th and 15th century. By the early decades of the 16th century, interlaced writing almost disappeared from the treasury of artistic devices of the Byzantine school.
