Breviary
Summer Histories (3–4 Regum)
F-j02u
Description completed as part of coursework for an undergraduate-level manuscript studies class with Dr. Adrienne Williams Boyarin (University of Victoria), December 2022.
General Information
Gothic Textualis
The script is similar to other twelfth-century Gothic manuscripts that still retain attributes from Caroline Minuscule forms. For example, the uncial d and final s are present while the ampersand "et" ligature is still present.
Original Condition
Current Condition
The two fragments are from the same gathering of the same book.
Book Decoration and Musical Notation
The decoration is limited to embellished red initials.
The anterior fragment, at the top of the outward-facing verso, has staffless neumes for the chant Montes Gelboe nec ros nec. The line directly below references Planxit autem David planctu magno.
The notation style is most similar to cheironomic or in campo aperto (staffless neumes), which typically predate 1200.
