More about the Current Condition

Two mildly worn brown pieces. There are worm-holes on the fragments. The writing shows through on the other side. 17 lines have remained. Current height of written area: 190 mm. About 5-10 letters are missing from the external edge of f. 1 and f. 3.

Book Decoration and Musical Notation

Description

Alternating two-line red and blue initials, initials pen-decorated and touched with red. Alternating red and blue majuscules. Rubrics. There are faces drawn in ink on f. 3v and 2v in the initial A.

      • Remarks

        The antiphons belonging to the psalms on the fragments differ from the items of the breviary and psalter of Passau and the items of the Breviarium Romanum. The antiphons correspond to the items of the antiphonary used by the Augustinien canons of Klosterneuburg.

    Remarks

    The former Psalterium must have been used in the Abbey of St. Nikola in Passau. The two bifolia were reused in the binding workshop of the abbey, which worked between 1486 and 1500 (Einbanddatenbank w002399).

    Remarks

    Binding: The two fragments were the original binding of the host volume. The first bifolium’s 2v–1r side was the inner side of the front cover, the second bifolium’s 4v–3r side was the inner side of the back cover. Nowadays, the host volume has a new blind-ruled leather binding. (Rozsondai 2013, nr. 483)
