More about the Current Condition

"Inside" or recto of the leaf is the smooth inside of the animal and remains is good condition with only minor staining in the northern (above the spine fold) section of the leaf.

The hair side of the animal or verso is darkened and dirty with ink stains and what looks like a water stain which is what has discolored the inside. The lettering is mostly intact on the inside/recto except for the bottom line of the first column, but on the outside/verso, the lettering is obscured in many places making for difficult reading.

Book Decoration and Musical Notation

Description

Fragment: Originally a 14th century legal leaf (decretals), which was repurposed roughly 200 years later, in the 16th century as the binding for a later codex. The size of this leaf is 180 x 290 mm. As it is now, both the original purpose and the reusing as a 16th century binding can be clearly seen. Some of the string used in the rebinding remains attached to the leaf on the sides and closure flap. Damage to this leaf includes discoloration spots, ink stains, apparent water damage, severe dirt on the verso which obstructs the original lettering.

Recto: The inside of the leaf, or the smooth side of the parchment, remains in good condition and features three lombardic capital initials, two in blue ink and one in red with no backgrounds. There is also one red pilcrow near the top left of the left column of text. Marginal decoration is minimal, although there is red, curving pen-flourishing within the bottom left margin of the left column connecting to one of the blue initials.

Verso: The hair side of the parchment is very darkened and dirty, however, four lombardic capital initials and eight or nine pilcrows can be seen. The capitals alternate between red and blue ink, while all but one of the pilcrows are in red ink. There is no marginal decoration on this side. Very faintly, a handwritten title and date can be made out, identified as seemingly being "Delle Doctroine del [illegible],” from 1571.
