More about the Current Condition

The parchment is very fine, nearly see-through.

The spine and fore-edge are rolled; there are some stains along the spine edge that look like glue; some of the ink is smudged; and on the verso near the decorative panel there is a black smudge. Additionally, there are pinprick size holes scattered across the leaf and while some match the edge of a letter, and could have been formed by the scribe, most holes do not line-up with the edge of letters.

Book Decoration and Musical Notation

Description

Fragment: The size of this leaf is 102 x 90 mm. Damage to this fragment includes tiny holes in the text, likely from insects, various dark marks and discoloration, as well as damage to the spine edge of the leaf from where it has been separated from the bifolium. Faint red guidelines can be seen on both sides. The vertical lines extend all the way to the edges of the page, while the guidelines in between the text block only extend as far as the lines of text. There are also horizontal guidelines extending to the edges of the page underneath the very top and bottom lines of text. (Note: In determining the recto and verso sides of this fragment, we have used clues such as the the continuation of lines of text from one side to the other, the size of the margins, and the uneven cuts left by the sewing structure from the binding.)

Recto: This side features no decoration, only text and the faint outline of guidelines.

Verso: On this side is one lombardic capital initial, the letter “C.” It is two lines tall, illuminated in gold, with a dark brown rectangular background and a gold flourish within the open, rounded space of the letter. There is one example of a rubric on this side of text, taking up two lines of text. Within the left margin, there is a vertical rectangle busy with floral decoration. Very fine, black lines of ink form a connected web of stems, with tiny black leaves, slightly larger brown leaves, and large green leaves. Only two flowers feature in this decoration; a yellow flower and a blue flower, seemingly a pansy.
