Mature Beneventan script with musical notation.

Palaeographic features

The monks who produced this manuscript took particular care. In addition to an elegantly illuminated letter A (Angelicis, cf. skin side, bottom), the original colouring of which has now faded, other capitals are illuminated and coloured in red and green. The shoulder of r at the end of a word is characterised by a calligraphic upward curve. The ligatures and abbreviations in the fragment are consistent with those found in MSS in Beneventan script dating to the half and second half of the XI century. Note that the 3-stroke, which stands for the letter m, is often placed not above the vowel but after it in order to avoid confusion with the musical notation. This practice is common in Beneventan antiphonaries and graduals.
General Remarks

The text of the gradual-troper corresponds roughly to that of Cod. Benevento 39, fol. 118v, on which see M. Locanto (2008) 'Il manoscritto 'Roma, Biblioteca Angelica, 123' nel quadro della tradizione tropistica italiana', I quaderni del m.æ.s. 11, 9-47.

The fragment is one leaf, the margins of which have been trimmed.

The fragment is in relatively good condition apart from a water stain affecting the top of the leaf (both skin and flesh side), and it does not seem to be affected by any flaking of the ink in the flesh side. This was a common problem, due to defective preparation of the parchment in Beneventan MSS (esp. from Monte Cassino) during the XI century.
