General Remarks
The Koran is a Moslem book of law, as well as of religion. It is most widely read book, and, next to the Bible, probably the most influential in the world. A great many devout Moslems commit much or all of it to memory in the course of their lives. This text is in the Arabic script called Nashki. It is one of the most common book-hands, characteristic of the Mohammedan scribes in their conquests of Persia, Arabia and North Africa and the Spanish Peninsula. The calligraphers of Islam generally signed their manuscripts. In this case the book has a postscript: Written by the poor servant, Mohammed, the sone of Mohammed, the son of Mohammed, the son of Atik Abmolwani.
