      The reconstruction in context:

As the title suggests, this reconstructed manuscript offers a glimpse into the third volume of Der Heiligen Leben, Redaktion I (HL-Red. I).

Der Heiligen Leben (HL) was a very widely spread legendary that was redacted in two phases (HL-Red. I and II). The first stage saw the addition of martyrology passages preceding the legend(s) for each day as well as the addition of numerous saints to ensure there was a reading for each day of the year. This increase in volume means the HL-Red. legendaries are transmitted in 3 volumes as opposed to the 2 volumes of the HL.

There are few remaining manuscripts containing HL-Red. I as opposed to the later HL-Red. II in which redaction all the legends were tweaked and stylistically updated.

      HL-Red. I Transmission:

So far, complete manuscripts of only the first and second of the three volumes are known:

Volume 1 (January - April): München, Stadtbibliothek, Cgm 536.

      Volume 2 (May - August): Heidelberg, Univ.-Bibl., cpg 153.

These fragments fill some of the gaps in the third volume.
