Summary:
These fragment pages and descriptions were the assessed projects of the students in the methodology course for Medieval History at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in the Autumn Semester 2024. They have since been revised for publication.
The fragments are an initial selection from the two boxes of fragments kept at Fribourg's Cantonal and University Library (BCU) - these can be found under the shelfmarks Ms. LE 05 and Ms. LE 15 respectively. The fragments selected contain texts in various languages (Latin, German, French, Dutch) and themselves take myriad forms - from reinforcing strips through to bifolia used as coverings.
The seminar worked on key methods in Codicology and Fragmentology with a particular focus on new approaches to describing and studying fragments. In a 'hands-on' approach, each student selected an ex-situ fragment for their project which they then examined in person and described on Fragmentarium.
With thanks to the Cantonal and University Library of Fribourg and particularly Jonathan Donzallaz for kindly supporting the project by way of professional images of the fragments.
