The two miniatures are now pasted onto small wood panels and then framed in a modern frame of gold painted wood. They were possibly cut out of a book of hours or prayerbook. Alternatively they could have been the outer panels of a small triptych made for personal devotion. The miniatures have been attributed to Simon Bening, based on the great similarity with a depiction of the baptism of Christ in the Beatty Rosarium (Dublin, Chester Beatty Library, W 099, fol. 26v).
