Reconstruction Summary

Fragment of a bifolium of a gradual with square notation on red staves. The fragment contains chants for the masses for the 17th and 18th Sundays after Whitsun. The host volume is a booklet of polyphonic musical manuscripts, originally part of a series, but only one more is extant. The other surviving booklet is bound in blank parchment, but has a small scrap of most likely the same notated manuscript pasted on the front cover (F-pila).

On the present fragment binding, a later hand has added a large capital B in a rectangular frame, indicating that the booklet inside the fragment binding contains the bass voice. Both L 43 booklets once belonged to Danish scholar Johannes Stephanius (1561-1625), whose ownership inscription on the front pastedown is dated 1582.
