The reproduction reflects the current state of the fragments. During much of the twentieth century the fragments were kept in frames in which they were pressed between two glass plates. As a result of the pressure the surface of the fragments was being seriously damaged and the ink stuck to the glass panes. During conservation treatment to halt further damage, the fragments were removed from their frames, but as a result most of the remaining ink was lost. The fragments are now extremely fragile. On many pages almost no writing is visible and the remaining visible writing shines through to the other side of the leaves and is visible as a mirror image.
