The leaf is from a dismembered Book of Hours. Foliated in a later hand: '173' is written in the top right corner (recto), and '17'’ in the top left corner (verso).
Contents: Part of the office of the Holy Cross, consisting of the stanzas of the hymn Patris sapientia veritas divina (The wisdom of the Father, and truth divine) recited at Sext, None and Vespers. For all hours, each stanza concludes with the same short verses: 'Adoramus te domine ihesus. Deus in adiutorium [meum intende]'.
The lament 'La misère est trop dure. que' (The misery is too hard) is written in the lower margin.
Decoration:
One 3-line, two 2-line initials in blue with decorated ovals on burnished gold grounds, and eight 1-line initials in gold on alternate blue or pink grounds with ovals painted in the opposite colour heightened with white pen work. Matching line fillers. Marginal panels feature acanthus tendrils in blue and sprays of red dianthus set against a scrolling vine with gold foliage sprouting small flower buds.
